I had a SUPER cool thing that happen today that I wanted to share with the community. I was waiting for the subway and was holding my metro card (stupid, I know) when it fluttered out of my hand and fell onto the platform right below where people wait for it. I of course freak out because this is a monthly metro card and I do not have the money to replace it (I'm unemployed) and I need it desperately. So, I start freaking out and hand my purse and cell phone  to the kindly looking woman standing right next to me as I get on the ground to climb down into the subway area. I dip a foot down and realize that even though the train is far away (actually not viewable at all), there's no way I'd make it down there and back up because I'm too short. I also look up to realize that everyone around me, including up the stairs, has stopped to watch and is sort of in panic mode, like what's she going to do?? (Good to know so many are at least paying attention).

All of a sudden, an incredibly tall gentleman scoots down, jumps into the area, grabs my card and jumps back up before I could even blink. It was amazing. I just kept saying thank you over and over and over. I was sooo grateful. My metro card was saved and I have an angel who helped me out. Just goes to show NYers can be caring and wonderful folks.

So, to the very tall gentleman with the black beanie cap and the lovely woman with the brown leather jacket and paper towels in her bag who saved my metro card at the 86th street 4/5/6 station today at around 5:30pm, thank you so much. You are what makes NYers awesome and you should be proud of yourselves. As for me, I have learned my lesson and now will immediately put my metro card away as soon as I've swiped it.

Today was a mixed bag.

I had a great night's sleep last night, which is so rare for me. I got up in a good mood, ready to have a productive NaNo day. But the phone kept ringing, George reminded me that we had to shop for Babette's birthday so I had to do that, then I had to go to the school, then the kids came home, then it was birthday dinner time, and then the day was over!

I was in a good mood all day, then the kids went to bed and I realized I'd accomplished nothing I got really down. Ugh.

Why can't I get away from Mars? I try to write about other stuff, but I always go back to Martian colonies.

What should I call my colony this time? I had the perfect name earlier, but I forgot it. argh.

Too hot??

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 12:45 AM
I just moved last week and when I first got here my room was like an icebox. I asked my roommate where the thermostat is, or if there was a way to control the heat in here. The radiators in the whole apartment are the type that are near the baseboards; the thermostat is in his bedroom. the ups and downs of our temperature wars.... )

Any advice?

My friend is looking for parts to fix some JBL speakers (a midrange and a tweeter).  The speakers are from the 70s and he needs the old parts.  I've tried searching for places that sell used parts but I've come up short.   Does anyone know of a place that sells old used parts?  Location doesn't really matter, I have a car and I'm willing to drive to help him out.  Thanks for any help!

Hi,

My mom is in town for the weekend, and I need to find a restaurant where my boyfriend's family can meet her.

Possibly unsolvable problem... )

I'm mostly looking for a really good American or Italian restaurant that serves great pasta without cheese or really great salads in Manhattan.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I reaaaally appreciate the input!

bulk bin spices?

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 8:10 AM
I'm looking to buy small amounts of very basic spices for baking along the lines of cinnamon, nutmeg etc. I'm in the Bronx, so anywhere around here or in Manhattan would be great. Thanks!

долго/надолго

What is the difference in meaning between долго and надолго.

Please use them in a sentence to illustrate the difference.

Thank you!

Capon?

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 7:13 PM
Where can I buy a capon for Thanksgiving?
Sheepshead Bay is good. So is Bushwick/Williamsburg. Certain parts of Manhattan along the F/J or Q/B lines are good, tambien, as long as it's reasonably priced and of good quality.
My boyfriend really wants one and Whole Foods aint carrying 'em anymore. Something about castration being "inhumane"?

Iron City Beer in NYC?

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 4:55 PM
Hello all,
I recently moved here from Pittsburgh, and was wondering if anyone knew where I could buy Iron City for a decent price? I found 6-packs of IC Light bottles at a Morton Williams near NYU for $10 (ha), and the Iron City site says there is a beer distributor in Greenpoint. Does anyone know of any other places where I can find 6-packs or cases, preferably in lower Manhattan or Brooklyn (I live in Park Slope)? I know Iron City tastes awful, but I miss Pittsburgh tons. Thanks!

Sad Kitteh Story...

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 4:19 PM
Hey people!

I am passing a message along for somebody without an LJ account that they have two kitties available for adoption. She originally adopted these two kitties out to another person who guaranteed they would be able to care for them. Unfortunately, that person is now reneging on the deal so she is back to square one in finding these two adorable kitties a new home. Under the cut is a pic of the two and their story in my friend's words...

If you are interested or know anybody who may be, please send me a private message and I'll provide you with her email address.

Hope somebody can take them into a good home!

Creative Tailor?

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 3:35 PM
Hello newyorkers,

I have a very large, warm, and comfy down winter jacket that was unfortunately barbecued on the front of a space heater inside a bar. On the back of the coat at the bottom seam, a roughly 5" x 5" patch of fabric was totally melted by the heat. I love this coat, and I definitely can't afford a new one.

Can someone recommend a place where I could have it repaired, or an individual who could do the job? I highly doubt it will ever look like new again, which is why I'm searching for someone to get a little creative with some sort of patch or stitching on the back. It will need to hold up to the elements, but other than that I'm open to ideas.

Thank you!

British-style remembrance poppies?

Does anyone know where I can find British-style remembrance poppies in NYC, similar to those seen here? Manhattan preferred, but will travel if necessary.
